Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is a rarity in sport. A man who aged 36 holds a sensational undefeated record of 44-0.
Mayweather would appear to be in a class of his own in this current era in which he completely out-boxes other world champions. There are very few to have entered a ring that can out-class other world champions with such ease.
Mayweather is at the pinnacle of the sport and is the man that every boxer out there dreams of facing. Any boxer that gets the chance of fighting Mayweather knows two things, that they have reached the top of the sport and that they are going to get the biggest pay-day of their career.
Every boxer that goes in with Mayweather knows that this is there chance to make history and really make a name for themselves. If they defeat Mayweather than they instantly become ‘the man’ in the sport.
This would provide huge determination for his opponent and guarantees that they will give everything that can in preparation for this fight and on the night. This heaps on even more credit for Mayweather as every time he goes into the ring he faces a man who is going to give everything.
Mayweather is a defensive genius which allows him to go through fights with barely a clean shot landing on him. His skill level is so high that it has other elite level fighters unable to put him under pressure.
It is difficult to even think of a clean shot that has landed on Mayweather’s chin in recent years and that is amazing to think considering the level of opponents that he faces.
Mayweather was born into a great boxing family with his father Floyd Mayweather Sr and uncles Roger and Jeff all boxers. Floyd in that aspect is very fortunate in having people who know all the about the sport there in his family to guide him through since he was young. This family is one that still to this day helps Floyd with both his father and uncle Roger involved in his training camps.
All the help in the world can only go so far though. One thing that cannot be taught is Mayweather’s natural ability. He has huge natural talent which yes has been developed over the years with hard work and commitment but he has natural talent which other can only ever dream of.
Mayweather is quick, slick, tactically astute and is for me too technically great for any other boxer in this era. Perhaps the greatest compliment to Floyd is that I don’t think we have ever seen the best of him. Floyd has never really been pushed to the limit in the ring or pushed to go up a level. He just goes about his work looking comfortable and as if he has so much more to give.
To say that a man who has got to 44-0 fighting the likes of Zab Judah, Oscar De Lay Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosely, Miguel Cotto and Robert Guerrero who have all be great champions with ever really being tested is remarkable. Floyd has fought the best out there time after time.
A world champion over five weight divisions Floyd is the icon of the sport. A brash young man who loved the celebrity life-style that his boxing success brought him, he was and to some extent still is unpopular to many. He is not a real warrior of a fighter so some regard that his fights be boring.
This for me is ridiculous. People who state such things for me aren’t true boxing people. Floyd is a remarkably skilled technician who true boxing fans can appreciate for the ease in which he outclasses top-level fighters.
Yes Floyd isn’t as exciting to watch as say a Manny Pacquaio but that is only because he doesn’t have to dig deep and get involved in wars because he is far superior to his opponents. When I watch Floyd Mayweather I look on in awe at a man who does things that others just cannot do.
Many thought that Floyd was really going to be tested against Robert Guerrero earlier on this year and that just wasn’t the case. Mayweather completely dominated Guerrero. He looked as good as ever and put to bed any suggestions that he may have lost some of his speed or skill as he gets older. He won so convincingly that it makes you wonder what an opponent has to do to be in with a chance of beating him.
Many will look back on Mayweather’s career and say we never will know if he truly was the best of his generation because he didn’t fight Pacquiao. Yes there is still time for such a fight to take place but personally I don’t see that it will ever take place.
To place a question mark on Floyd’s legacy based upon a failure for these two great fighters to meet is legitimate and Manny Pacquaio is also a legend of the sport.
Even if they were to meet now I still don’t think that it would resolve the issue and Pacquiao is not the same fighter that he was a few years ago. For me this fight should have taken place a few years ago and it would have been one of the biggest fights to have ever taken place. It would truly have decided who the greatest fighter of the generation was.
We all have our opinions on who would have won in their primes and I can see great reasons for why people would say that either man would be the one to win. I personally would have backed Floyd to win as he is just so technically brilliant.
I think that it would be an extremely tough fight and Floyd would probably be tested like never before but I just don’t think that Manny would be able to land enough big shots on Floyd to knock him out and I can’t see anyone out-boxing Mayweather.
Mayweather’s imperious undefeated record will be on the line again soon against a good, young fighter in Saul Alvarez who is also an undefeated fighter. Canelo looks to be a real star of the sport but for me it is too early on in his career to come through successfully.
I just think that Floyd has got too much for him. I expect Floyd to win this fight via a unanimous decision and expect Mayweather to continue on undefeated until he decides that it is time to call it a day and retire.
Mayweather is for me without doubt the pound for pound king of this sport and although many criticise him I think that history will look back on the career of Floyd Mayweather with great fondness.
He has fought the best out there and won multiple world titles in the process and hasn’t ever really been tested.
Floyd Mayweather the king on his generation!
