As the 13/14 season draws near, Liverpool's futile attempt to add to its squad is looking like an indication of another empty season for the soldiers of the red half of Merseyside.

Since Brendan Rodgers took over from the calamitious reign of Kenny Dalglish, there has been no doubt that he has made significant improvements to an under-achieving Liverpool team.

Rodgers has brought stability to Liverpool, signing Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea and Philippe Coutinho from Internazionale, who have both showed during their short time on Merseyside that they can be both become very important players for the club.

However, as the transfer market has gone on, Rodgers has failed to significantly improve key areas of the Liverpool squad, a task that needs to be completed in swift fashion if the Reds are to have any hope of challenging for any silverware, let alone trying to break into the Champions League.

Rodgers attempts at improving the squad have so far fallen short, as midfield target Henrikh Mkhitaryan chose to head to Borussia Dortmund and Roberto Soldado decided to swap the white of Valencia for the white of Tottenham Hotspur.

The latter will have especially hurt the Reds seeing as a few years ago, not many players would have chosen to pick Tottenham over Liverpool. Now, times have changed.

Although Rodgers has not brought a significant amount of quality into the Liverpool side, he has managed to improve the depth of the squad by making some shrewd signings, replacing the retired Jamie Carragher with Kolo Toure from Man City, who still has at least three good years in him.

He has also signed Luis Alberto from Sevilla and Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo, who have both impressed in Liverpool's preseason schedule. Also, with Martin Skrtel set to head to Napoli on loan, this will allow Rodgers to move for another central defender, namely Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

However, there are still parts of the team that need to be improved drastically, such as the defence, with Jose Enrique still considerd a liability and Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure the only recognized central defenders. Also, their midfield and forward lines need improvement as it looks like Suarez is most likely heading to Arsenal and players such as Stewart Downing, Oussama Assaidi & Jordan Henderson failing to make a meaningful contribution to the team last season, Liverpool could lose the depth and quality they crave and so desperately need to challenge for top honour.
