It seemed to be a forgone conclusion that Brazil star David Luiz would ply his trade next season, however Spanish newspaper Deportivo Mundo has added a new twist by reporting that the defender is willing to take a pay cut in order to join Barcelona.

Luiz is the new poster boy of Chelsea and is one of the favourites of their billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.

Inspite of Barcelona's interest in the player, there was no way Chelsea were letting go of their young flamboyant defender.

Moreover, new manager Jose Mourinho had recently revealed that their star defender was staying put at Chelsea when speculation had increased that they were negotiating with Manchester United for Wayne Rooney with Luiz involved in the deal.

But the latest rumours add a new dimension to his whereabout next season as the paper also claims the defender is intent on a move and does not want to miss out on the opportunity to join the La Liga giants.

They further add that the directors of Barcelona have been made aware of the defender's wishes as to take a significant pay cut in order to play at the Camp Nou next season.

Meanwhile, according to the Daily Mirror, Chelsea have put a £45million price tag on the defender in order to discourage Barcelona from making any second attempts to sign the player after their initial offer was rejected.

Barcelona have been looking to bring in a top quality defender to partner Gerard Pique next season and have reportedly honed in on Luiz and Daniel Agger of Liverpool, with Luiz being their first-choice.

The Catalan club are believed to be willing to negotiate a fee as far as £35million for the Brazilian international, with money not being a problem for them, according to their vice-president Javier Faus.
