Mikel Arteta is hoping to see Arsenal delve into the transfer market before the summer window closes, according to Metro.
Despite having been heavily linked with Luis Suarez, the Gunners have only made one signing so far - Yaya Sanogo on a free.
With the new season kicking off in less than two weeks time, vice-captain Arteta believes that if Arsenal are to take their football to the next level, they must make good on their promise to spend money.
"If the club can target players who will improve the team they are going to be very welcome because that is what we want — a better team, better players to compete and win trophies," said the 31-year-old midfielder.
"The club is working on that. It is in their hands and I am sure they are going to do it.”
So far this pre-season, the Gunners have been linked with a number of big-money moves, including a botched attempt at bringing ex-Real Madrid man Gonzalo Higuain to the Emirates Stadium, along with speculation linking them with the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Wayne Rooney and notably Luis Suarez.
Manager Arsene Wenger has affirmed that the club will not spend money needlessly however, and has highlighted that he is comfortable with the capabilities of his current squad.
The Frenchman said: "If we can add something, we will do. But it’s very difficult to predict if something will be sorted out before we play in the Champions League qualifier."
