4. Lilian Thuram | €36.5 million loss
Parma to Juventus €41.5m
In 2001, Thuram signed for a Juventus side widely considered the strongest in the world at the time.
He was a striker’s worst nightmare in his prime – a rock-solid centre-back with pace to burn.
The 41-year-old remains among the most expensive of his kind, even today.
He formed one of the most impenetrable defences in Italy alongside Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluca Zambrotta and Jonathan Zebina between 2004 and 2006.
Two of the four Serie A titles Thuram lifted in Turin were revoked amid the 2006 Italian football scandal and after five years at the club, the chaos forced Juventus to sell one of their top players to Barcelona for next to nothing.
Juventus to FC Barcelona €5m
The Guadeloupe-born enforcer managed 41 appearances for the Catalan giants before a gradual slide down the pecking culminated in his tragic retirement from football due to a rare heart condition.
A heart-breaking way to end the career of such an incredible footballer.
