Top five: Transfer losses of all-time (6)

Published 2 Comments

1. Zlatan Ibrahimović | €45.5 million loss

Inter Milan to FC Barcelona €69.5m

Zlatan Ibrahimović commanded the biggest transfer fee of his career as Barcelona lured him to Spain after a hugely successful spell with the Nerazzurri.

After his final season in Milan, Barça were willing to use Samuel Eto’o as makeweight to secure the Serie A top-scorer.

The agreement in principle involved the giant Swede joining the La Liga outfit for million €46 million as the €20 million-rated Eto’o went the opposite way.

The initial deal also included Alexander Hleb signing on loan, but this clause fell through and ultimately cost Barcelona €69.5 million plus Eto’o to get their man.

All this fuss and the Swedish striker only managed 16 goals in a moody one-year stint before falling out with Pep Guardiola and jetting back to Italy.

FC Barcelona to AC Milan €24m

In August 2010, the former Juventus and Inter player joined AC Milan on loan with the option to sign a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Twenty-one goals in 41 matches later, he elected to complete a prearranged €24 million move to the Rossoneri on 18 July 2011.
