Manziel reportedly investigated for autograph cash payments
Johnny Manziel may have received money from signing autographs, according to reports
Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is under investigation for possibly getting paid up to five figures for signing autographs and memorabilia, according to an Outside The Lines report.
This is not the first time he has been in trouble this offseason, but if these allegations are true, he could sit out the whole 2013 season.
He has made headlines throughout the summer with his questionable decisions such as going to a frat party at the University of Texas and leaving the Manning Passing Academy. He also tweeted that he couldn't wait to leave College Station, but the message was deleted shortly after and he apologized.
This is supposed to be an important season for Manziel because it will show scouts that he can continue to perform consistently on a high level after winning the Heisman last year.
The Aggies play a relatively easy schedule this season with the exception of LSU and Alabama. If Manziel could defeat one of the two teams mentioned above and perform as well as he did last year, he could win the Heisman again and prove that he is a first round quarterback.
He is widely expected to forgo the last two years of eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft, but all these missteps might affect his draft stock negatively as some franchises might raise questions about his character and immaturity.
If he were to miss the entire or majority of the season, it would be hard to justify a decision to declare for the draft.
If he were to declare, he probably wouldn't be selected in the first round because of his immaturity and lack of experience. He also would have a harder time getting a starting job than a quarterback selected in the first round. Even if an NFL team were to take a gamble and choose him in the first round, he would not be the first pick, because that most likely will be Jadeveon Clowney.
If he were to get in trouble for this autograph situation, I think he should wait until next season to declare for the draft. It gives him time to mature and it would allow scouts to see that his past problems are a long way behind him.
If Manziel were to play well, he would get a higher salary and would have a greater chance of starting immediately. If does not change and continues to make bad decisions, he could be the next bust like Ryan Leaf, Tony Mandarich, or Todd Maranovich.
