Manchester United are ready to turn their attention to Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger if their prospective deal for Cesc Fabregas falls apart, reports the Daily Mirror.
Barcelona have already rejected two bids of £25million and £30million from Manchester United for Spanish midfielder Fabregas.
The Premier League champions will now make a final bid for the 26-year-old understood to be a club-record fee of £35million this week.
However, the Daily Mirror also claims that David Moyes will end his pursuit for Fabregas if Barcelona reject the third bid, and will turn his attention to Schweinsteiger.
The Germany international will have to fight for his position in the Bayern Munich line-up in the upcoming season, with the Bavarian club having plenty of young prospects in midfield.
Xherdan Shaqiri, Toni Kroos, Luiz Gustavo, Javi Martinez and new addition Thiago Alcantara could be Pep Guardiola's preference over Schweinsteiger.
Despite his age, the 29-year-old will cost around £25million. Manchester United have failed to materialise transfers of their top midfield targets including Alcantara, Kevin Strootman and Fabregas.
Schweinsteiger could still prove to be a fascinating first marquee signing for Moyes at Old Trafford, as Manchester United begin the title-defence of their Premier League title in less than two weeks.
