He's been a British sporting star for over eight years, already competed in two Olympic games and won numerous competitions along the way, but it seems Tom Daley might be preparing for his toughest challenge yet.

The 19-year-old diver is set to star in a show commissioned by ITV2 entitled 'Tom Daley Takes On The World'. The programme will see the Olympic sensation travelling the world with his best friend, Sophie, in true gap-year student style.

Despite being recognised almost everywhere he ventures, Daley will be sleeping in hostels, kipping on night-trains and partaking in all manner of excursions as he embarks on a life-altering trip to some of the world's most remote locations.

During the six-week adventure, which will see him visit places like Morocco, New Zealand and Japan, Daley will be challenging himself to complete a bucket-list that includes flying a jet-plane and bungee jumping.

You might be forgiven for predicting Daley would be daunted by his big plans, but the young athlete could not be keener to get going.

“I can’t wait to get away on my trip. Diving and training are my first love, but I am looking forward to a break from the norm and discovering more about places I’ve never had the chance to explore before. And to do it all with my best friend will be amazing," Daley said.

ITV’s director of digital channels and acquisitions, Angela Jain, said: “Tom’s career as a diver has captivated the nation, we hope this show will give people the chance to see the teenager behind the trunks as he enjoys his global back-packing adventure.”

Juliet Rice, head of factual entertainment at Twofour, says: “I am always amazed by Tom’s schedule and his commitment to his sport. This six week adventure will give him the chance to let his hair down and face a whole set of new experiences like any other teenager on the cusp of adulthood.”

The show should make for interesting viewing considering that Daley, though far from being a pampered A-lister normally, will be roughing it in true student style.

As he takes this six-week sabbatical from his training regime, fans will hope to see a side of Daley that his exploits in the pool cannot convey.
