Newcastle United could complete a second signing this week after being told by Liverpool that Stewart Downing is available for only £5 million, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Liverpool are prepared to suffer a loss of £15million with the club willing to off-load the winger to the Toon Army in a cut-price deal.
Newcastle have been in contact with the player's representative to confirm their interest in the Englishman and find out whether he would be keen on a move to the north east.
Downing, who cost the Anfield club £20million for Aston Villa two years ago, has not lived up to expectation in his 91 appearances for Liverpool.
The 29-year-old reportedly had no intention of leaving Anfield after being reassured by manager Brendan Rodgers that he remains part of his plans.
However, Rodgers now intends to hold talks with the England international about his future at the club after learning of Liverpool's willingness to sell him on.
The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough employee, who has two years left on his contract, is keen to stay at the Merseyside club and fight for his place and said: "I feel settled now. The first year at Liverpool was difficult but once I established myself in the team last season I really enjoyed it.
"That's why I don't want to leave. If you are playing with good players in a good team then you don't want to lose that."
