Bolton manager Dougie Freedman has said that he will do everything in his power to re-sign Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing on a permanent basis.
Spearing played on loan at the club last season.
The 24-year-old impressed both fans and players in his time at the club last season and now a free agent after leaving Liverpool.
After fellow Championship club Blackburn pulled out of a deal to sign the midfielder, Freedman is now keen to make his move.
"Jay is a fantastic player, our player of the season, and available. We’ll try our very best to make it happen." Freedman told BBC Radio Manchester.
Fans are very keen on signing Spearing, with 96% of fans in a local newspaper voting in favour of bringing the player back to Bolton on a permanent basis.
However, as much as Freedman would like to see Spearing back at the club, he also said that the financial aspect must be right for the club.
"We’ve got Financial Fair Play and I’ve got a responsibility to this football club," continued Freedman.
"We’ve done very well with free transfers. If somebody like Jay comes up and the deal is right for the football club, then yes, we will be looking at that."
Bolton have already signed both Alex Baptiste and Marc Tierney on free transfers, while the only fee they have currently paid so far in the transfer window is for Leicester striker Jermaine Beckford.
