Arsenal had the second best defence in last year's Premier League.
Indeed, they only conceded 37 goals, which is their best defensive record since the 2008/09 season.
At the beginning of last season, Arsene Wenger's favourite partnership for the two spots in central defence was Laurent Koscielny and the captain Thomas Vermaelen.
But due to injuries and lack of fitness, the pair never really played on a regular basis - and when they did, Vermaelen fell out of favour and was dropped to the bench just before the Champions League second leg against Bayern Munich.
Per Mertesacker had to fill in throughout the campaign. The German defender did it superbly: he was a massive asset and brought some steel to the Gunners' defence.
Now, Wenger has been looking to reinforce his defence in this transfer window. He has targeted Swansea's captain Ashley Williams. The Welshman would be a great addition as he is very strong and a good ball player, which would enable him to fit in Arsenal's system.
Moreover, the injury-prone Vermaelen is set to miss the start of the season with a back injury. On top of that, Johan Djourou was sent on a season-long loan to Hamburg. This leaves Arsenal with only two central defenders: Koscielny and Mertesacker.
Indeed, on the Asian tour and at the Emirates Cup, Bacary Sagna had to play in central defence to cover for the injuries.
It is important now that Arsenal move fast to sign an experienced central defender, like Williams, either to compete for a starting spot or to cover for the injuries.
