Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's promises of a summer transfer window full of quality signings looks set to end up as mere trash talk as another target appears set to move elsewhere.
Eurosport reports that Fiorentina are set to beat the Gunners to the signing of Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar, after Queens Park Rangers accepted their €3million bid.
The Italian club are close to securing the player for next season, with personal terms and a medical all that remains before announcing the deal to the world.
Arsenal looked like they had this deal under wraps, but the latest reports should be cause for concern for fans as the club is yet to announce a significant signing despite being linked with plenty of players throughout the summer.
33-year-old Cesar, who recently won the Confederations Cup with Brazil, would have been the perfect signing for the Gunners, who were looking for an experienced head in goal before passing on the baton to Wojciech Szczesny in a couple of years.
Napoli were also in the running to sign the Brazilian shot-stopper, but negotiations collapsed due to the player's high wages. The Partenopei have since signed Pepe Reina from Liverpool on a year-long loan deal.
Arsenal were plagued with goal keeping issues last season as their keepers failed to stand up to the task, with neither Szczesny nor Lukasz Fabianski able to hold down a regular starting spot in the first-team.
