Arsenal should prioritise a defensive midfielder signing

So far in the summer transfer window, Arsenal have primarily been trying to conclude deals for a new striker.

After successfully signing Yaya Sanogo, the Gunners lost out in the battle for Gonzalo Higuain, who joined Napoli, and are now strongly linked with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, with a second bid of £40million being rejected by the Merseyside club.

Although Arsenal's need for a striker is very important, a position in the team that has not yet been addressed is defensive midfielder.

The impact of a high quality and specialised defensive midfielder will have an instant affect on the Arsenal team as a whole. It will allow Arsene Wenger to be more organised when defending and will make it easier for the Gunners to regain possession.

As well as more defensive stability, a defensive midfielder will also be able to contribute in attacks and act as an anchor-man in midfield.

A striker will score more goals but a defensive midfielder will benefit the whole team in both halves of the pitch and, with further additions, will allow Arsenal to start competing for major honours again.

There is little doubt that Arsene Wenger has potential targets in mind, who would be suited to the role, but he should really start to show his interest if he has not already with the new season rapidly approaching.

With greater economic firepower, money should not be an obstacle when bringing players in which puts the club in a very strong position and allows them to compete for any target they see fit to buy.
