As the Luis Suarez transfer saga carries on, many are watching with awe at what could be one of the biggest transfers of the last decade.

However, those that are looking beyond the possibility of Suarez swapping Merseyside for London will know that Arsenal are going to need major strengthening in order to be considered as contenders for the coming season.

Whilst Arsenal may need to bolster their forward lines, there are other parts of the team that also need improving before the transfer window shuts.

A good example would be the Gunners' midfield.

There is no denying that Wenger has a plethora of attacking talent in the form of Wilshere, Carzola & Co. However, the lack of having defensive minded midfielders or even all rounded midfielders has cost Arsenal dearly in past seasons.

With their rivals having midfielders that can carry the ball from deep whilst protecting the back four (Paulinho at Tottenham & Yaya Toure at Man City), Arsenal only have Arteta, who has only recently been converted to a holding midfielder & Diaby, has failed to find any consistency in the past few seasons.

Then there is the defence, which Wenger knows he can not leave unattended. Mertesacker has steadily begun to prove he could be a liability for next season whilst Koscielny continues to look edgy here and there.

This leaves Thomas Vermaelen as the only recognised central-defender of world class ability in the Arsenal squad. Also, players such as Gibbs & Jenkinson have failed to reach the standards expected of them whilst Monreal needs more time to adjust to the Premier League, leaving the Gunners with a below par defence in front of Wojech Szczesny.

Arsenal have continued to be linked with players such as Suarez, however these are not the additions that Arsene Wenger needs to be making in order to strengthen the Arsenal squad and time is running out for him to bring in players that turn Arsenal in contenders for all competitions in the following season.
