Alan Pardew has played down talk that Newcastle are trying to sign Stewart Downing.

Earlier this week reports surfaced insinuating that the Liverpool winger was being courted by the Magpies, but Pardew has moved to deny the rumours.

When asked if he had any hand in the potential transfer, thought to be in the region of around £5million, Pardew said: “Not really. I don’t know where that really come from.

“There’s been no enquiry from us and we have made no noises to Liverpool.”

Downing, who plied his trade at Aston Villa before securing a £20million move to Merseyside two years ago, has had a relatively disappointing time at Anfield.

In his first season at the club he struggled to find form and finished the year having failed to score or assist any goals. Last term he was slightly better, but found it hard to maintain a starting place in Brendan Rodgers starting eleven.

There has been heavy speculation linking the 29-year-old winger with a move away from Liverpool this summer, with a number of mid-table clubs reportedly interested in securing his signature.
