Tottenham to sign Real Madrid defender?

Tottenham are on the verge of completing a £13m deal for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao, according to the Daily Star.

It's reported that the deal to take the Portugal international to White Hart Lane is not connected to the potential transfer of Gareth Bale, who has been strongly linked with an £85m move to the Bernabeu this summer.

Chelsea had been linked with the 25-year-old, who rose to prominence with Benfica before completing a €30m move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in July 2011, but it's Tottenham who are poised to win the race for his signature.

Andre Villas-Boas is believed to be a keen admirer of his compatriot Coentrao - and after sanctioning the sale of centre-back Steven Caulker to Cardiff City, the Spurs boss is keen to strengthen his defence before the end of the transfer window.

With plenty of big-game experience under his belt, including multiple Clasicos and Champions League clashes, Coentrao would be a significant upgrade on current first-choice left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

If signed, the athletic full-back would become Spurs' fourth major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli.
