Was Jason Dufner's USPGA Championship round the best ever?

.

On the second day of the 95th USPGA Championships, Jason Dufner was one putt away from making history.

He made a round of 63, but had the 2011 runner-up holed a birdie putt on the 18th hole, he would’ve carded the lowest round score ever in a Major. The 63 which he did make equalled the course record at Oak Hill and it took the 2012 Ryder Cup player to 9 under par, making him the overnight leader.

He couldn’t capitalise on Day 3 however, as tough conditions made scoring difficult, and he carded a 1 over-par 71. This leaves him 1 behind the leader, American Veteran Jim Furyk, who shot a 2 under-par 68.

But is Dufner’s 63 the best round ever carded at a major? If he wins it probably will be, but if not then it will be seen as so close, but yet so far. This led me to think about some of the other great Major Championship rounds, and one springs straight to mind, not just because it was so recent but because it was just so remarkable.

Phil Mickelson came from five strokes back to clinch his first Open title and fifth major on a dizzying final day at Muirfield, just last month. He birdied 4 out of the last 6 holes to take the title by 3 shots.

It was the third leg of Mickelson’s attempt at a Career Grand Slam, having already won the Masters (2004, 2006, 2010) the USPGA (2005) and now the Open of 2013. The only Major that now eludes him is the US Open where he has a record 6 runner-up finishes.

Dufner also has a major disappointment in his career having lost the 2011 USPGA in a play-off to Keagan Bradley. I think this could be his time though, as his big droving, consistent short game, and excellent putting suit the Oak Hill course in upstate New York.
