With speculation continuing over the future of Luis Suarez and which club he will find himself lining up for next season, I believe it is important to look at just how essential it is for the Reds to secure their leading striker - if they wish to start their climb back up to the top of English and European football.
If Liverpool were to lose Suarez they simply wouldn’t have the attacking depth to cover him. Suarez scored 30 goals in all competitions for Liverpool throughout the 2012/13 season.
Twenty-three of these goals were scored in the Premier League, making him only the third Liverpool player to score over 20 goals in a Premier League season. This stat alone showcases just how rare it is for Liverpool to have such a prolific goalscorer within their squad in recent years.
After Suarez, last season’s next highest goalscorers were Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, with 11 and 10 goals respectively.
Although these are both very handy contributions it’s not enough to suggest that these players will be able to fill the gap left if Suarez were to leave.
Liverpool’s striking options would become even more worrying with the fact that Fabio Borini, a player brought in at the start of last season to help take some of the load of Suarez’s shoulders as well as help Liverpool’s attack not be so one dimensional, only managed 13 Premier League appearances which brought only a solitary goal in that time.
Although he can sometimes grab the headlines for all the wrong reasons and divide public opinion on account of some of his on-field behaviour, there’s no denying Suarez’s obvious talent and how important he is to this current Liverpool team.
If Liverpool wish to be a genuine force again then securing Suarez for next season should be their number one priority throughout the summer period - because there’s no doubting that much of Liverpool’s hopes will come down to whether or not he decides to stay loyal to the Anfield club.
