If the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo goes through, Arsenal will have wasted a huge chunk of money, which would have been better used on a striker.
Don’t get me wrong, Gustavo is a fantastic player, but he’s not what Arsenal need right now. The Gunners need a striker, and a central defender, not a central midfielder.
The north London club’s strongest position is centre midfield, with Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey all occupying the position. This will inevitably leave at least one, maybe two star player’s on the bench, but there will still be a couple of positions very weak.
With the transfer at a reported £14 million, that could have gone a long way to signing a striker or defender.
Yet again, Arsene Wenger has shown he lacks judgement when it comes to signing big players. He’s a genius when he needs to sign a promising young player, but when he is given a big wedge of money - he has no idea what to do with it.
Managers of top clubs must be confident when making big transfers - Wenger doesn’t look like he wants the responsibility.
Arsenal are a huge club, but there is a lack of ambition with Wenger at the helm. They are happy to settle for top four, and don’t risk anything for the title. For Arsenal to take the extra step, and win the title again, Wenger must go.
The Frenchman is fantastic when it comes to tactics, but is better suited to a smaller club, where he can uncover hidden gems, but doesn’t have to deal with big money. Arsenal’s board have been to loyal to Wenger in the last few years, but now it’s time to get tough.
