During Arsene Wenger's reign at Arsenal, he has produced and purchased some spectacular midfielders and continues to find top talent to this day.
Arsenal's current midfielder's are Abou Diaby, Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and sometimes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. All of which, when at the top of their game, are world class midfielder's.
Unfortunately, due to never-ending occurrence of injuries, Abou Diaby has not yet been able to utilise the great talent he has.
A fully fit Diaby would be like a new signing for Arsenal as he could play in the defensive midfield position and also attack forcefully.
The other midfielder's listed are regular players and are all important to the team.
All of the players here are fantastic for Arsenal but they are all attacking midfielder's. Ramsey and Arteta have both played in defensive midfield and did a good job but they are both far more useful when playing in an attacking role.
With all of the midfielder's suited to playing in attacking positions it would naturally create competition for places within the squad making them even better players than they are already. However, due to all these attacking midfielder’s, there is nobody to fill the defensive midfield position.
Since the departure of Alex Song in the summer of 2012, Arsenal have really lacked a physical presence in midfield.
A specialised defensive midfielder will allow the rest of Arsenal's midfielder's to fight for places further up the pitch and do what they do best.
The addition of a defensive midfielder will be able to act as an anchor behind these fantastic attacking players and create foundations for them to attack.
Arsenal must not buy a satisfactory midfielder, they should buy a top quality defensive midfielder.
The physical attributes, which would be required from a defensive midfielder, include a strong and imposing presence, speed on and off the ball and a good engine.
As well as a good physical player, Arsenal need a defensive midfielder who is just as strong mentally.
Intelligence on and off the ball, determination and drive would be needed, as with any player. The defensive midfielder must have good ability to pass the ball so that he can work well with Arsene Wenger's style of play.
With the addition of an elite defensive midfielder, Arsenal's attack and defence will be strengthened. The defensive midfielder could assist the defence in breaking down attacks and allow the other midfielder's further up the pitch to do what they do best-attack with strength and class.
