Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has insisted that Reds legend Steven Gerrard is the best footballer he has ever played with during his career.
Scottish international Adam, now a first-team regular at the Britannia Stadium for Stoke City, played alongside Gerrard at Anfield for one season in 2011-12 following a big-money move from Blackpool.
Yet, despite only sharing a pitch with the Liverpool skipper for that solitary campaign under Kenny Dalglish, Adam claims that he spent more than enough time with the player to witness his apparently unrivalled brilliance both on the pitch at Anfield and the training ground at Melwood.
Ahead of the friendly encounter between England and Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday, Adam told Liverpool's official website: "On and off the pitch, he is one of the real gentleman in the game.
"I was fortunate enough to share a dressing room with him and to see him at close-quarters. It was an honour to play beside him.
"He is the best I've played beside, without a shadow of a doubt. He is probably one of the top players in the Premier League over the past 10 years. There was a full house at his testimonial the other week and everybody at Liverpool adores him."
Wednesday's keenly-anticipated friendly is not the only occasion Adam will have to reacquaint himself with Gerrard's ability in the coming days.
On Saturday, the Potters begin life under Mark Hughes in the Premier League with a trip to Anfield to face Brendan Rodgers' Reds in the opening game of the 2013/14 campaign.
