Arsenal are interested in adding Atsuto Uchida to their defensive ranks, according to Goal.com.
The website has reported that the Premier League side have contacted the German club about the possibility of tying up a deal before the end of the summer transfer window.
The 25-year-old right-back could be an ideal long-term replacement for Bacary Sagna, who has just entered the final year of his contract with the Gunners.
Negotiations over a new deal for the French full-back collapsed towards the end of last season. Even though talks between the club and player have apparently resumed, Arsene Wenger could do with adding competition to his defence.
The Schalke defender would potentially cost the London club £5m and he has two years left on his current deal at the Veltins Arena.
Uchida is no stranger to big occasions, having represented the Bundesliga side in the Champions League.
The right-back, who has 60 caps for Japan, poses an attacking threat with his pace, which could see him blend into the Arsenal squad well.
Arsene Wenger tends to prefer full-backs who will look to push forward, with the likes of Sagna and Kieran Gibbs defenders who are equally confident when pushing up to the final third.
