Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed via Twitter that mercurial forward Lee Tomlin has submitted a transfer request, which has subsequently been rejected.

Tomlin, 24, was offered a new contract at London Road following a plethora of impressive performances during the club's unsuccessful Championship campaign last season. However, he turned down the offer and has now informed the League One side of his intention to leave.

He does, though, still have nearly two years remaining on his contract.

MacAnthony, who regularly provides the latest news regarding the club via his the social networking site Twitter, lambasted Tomlin's agent before revealing the news.

He tweeted: "Obviously L Tomlin's agent has been speaking to the press as all classy agents like him do.

"He is not for sale and any [transfer] request is turned down! That's all I'll say on the Tomlin matter."

Having started his career at Rushden and Diamonds, Tomlin moved to Peterborough in 2010, instantly becoming an influentual member of the side. He particularly impressed last season as he finished the season with 13 goals, making the the club's joint-top scorer.

MacAnthony later jestingly compared Tomlin to some more high-profile players seeking moves away from their clubs. "First Rooney, then Bale followed by Suarez and now Tommo. What is it with these flair like players and summer controversy?" was his next Tweet.

Peterborough have already lost Dwight Gayle this some, so would be loath to lose another attacking threat.

He is not the only player to have declared his intention to leave this summer, as Gabriel Zakuani handed in a request earlier in the summer.

Posh have signaled that they will do the utmost to keep hold of both players despite their desires to exit.
