Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has apparently spoken personally to club president Florentino Perez to convince the supremo against selling the club's Argentine winger Angel di Maria this summer.
Tancredi Palmeri of CNN had quoted Di Maria in a tweet saying that Ronaldo had spoken in his favour with Perez recently to keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Palmeri: "Cristiano Ronaldo has asked personally to Florentino Perez to keep me at Real Madrid."
Di Maria had been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital this summer after an indifferent last season, but it seems the player is now set to stay with Madrid for another campaign after Ronaldo's intervention.
Moreover, new manager Carlo Ancelotti is another fan of the pacey Argentine winger, and has handed Di Maria more starts than most of the players in his squad in Madrid's pre-season.
The player in an interview with Argentinian broadcaster TyC Sports has admitted to Ronaldo's apparent blocking of his sale.
"Yes, it's true. He didn't tell me, but I found out through someone else," said the winger.
"I'm delighted to play alongside an icon like him at Real. It makes me proud that he said good things about me and supported my cause to stay, since there was speculation that I was leaving. It's very important for me."
The revelation comes amid reports that certain members of the Madrid squad are not very happy with Perez's willingness to break the current world transfer record for Gareth Bale, whose arrival is sure to banish Di Maria to the fringes of Madrid's squad this season.
Ronaldo who holds considerable sway inside the Madrid dressing room these days had also reportedly refused to publicly endorse Madrid's pursuit of Bale, amid speculation that he is one of the players who believe that Madrid do not require the Welsh winger for the coming season.
