GMS Academy member Muneeb Ahsan has put together a full starting XI and substitutes bench of players he believes are criminally overrated.

There are some high-profile names in what is sure to be one of the most controversial Overrated XIs seen yet on GMS. Have

GOALKEEPER

Pepe Reina

The 30-year old Spaniard was once regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League however Reina has not performed in the past two seasons, and has conceded multiple costly mistakes in big games. A disappointing 2012-13 campaign with Liverpool which included some disappointing performances led him being shipped to Napoli on a season-long loan. He might have played his last match for Liverpool.

DEFENDERS

Dani Alves

Despite playing for La Liga giants Barcelona and the Brazilian national side, Dani Alves is incredibly overrated. The right-back is one of those players who is in the Barcelona squad sheet on a weekly basis, Yet he rarely provides the team with anything extraordinary.

Gerard Pique

Once regarded as one of the world's best centre backs but now his recent performances have not gone unnoticed. His, among others, poor displays against Bayern Munich in the Champions' League saw seven goals conceded in the two-leg semi-final. The Spaniard is in many cases too slow to compete with opposition forwards and is one of the most overrated players in the world.

Marcelo

The left-back is highly rated by Real Madrid, but the Brazilian is prone to defensive lapses, aggression problems, rash tackles and diving. Nonetheless, the 23-year-old has skill but at times is considered to be better than his all-round contribution warrants.

Patrice Evra

This may be controversial, but Patrice Evra, for all of the praise he receives from his manager and team-mates, is constantly caught out of position and beaten in one-on-one situations.

MIDFIELDERS

Luis Nani

The Portuguese winger was signed from Sporting Lisbon for a substantial fee, but has failed to really make a breakthrough in his Manchester United career. He has fallen behind Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young at Old Trafford, and the purchase of Crystal Palace youngster Wilfried Zaha will surely see Nani look elsewhere.

Samir Nasri

He was magic with Arsenal, not only becoming a force in the EPL but beginning to show his prowess in the Champions League…then he chose to chase the money train to Manchester City. Nasri now finds himself playing second fiddle to the midfield maestro that is David Silva. His form has been inconsistent and has not hit previous heights since his move from Arsenal.

Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez cost La Liga side Barcelona a total fee of over £30million from Udinese. However, he is too inconsistent and has been exceeded by teammates, the arrival of Neymar might mark the end of his Barcelona career. He really should look elsewhere.

Stewart Downing

Luckily he secured a £6million pound move to West Ham, which I think is a ridiculous amount of money for a player like him. Lately Liverpool have been making lots of ridiculous signings and £20million for Downing was one of them. No goals and no assists in his debut season made him a flop and due to his bad form he was a £14million loss for Liverpool.

FORWARDS

Danny Welbeck

Welbeck is not good enough for Manchester United but he was favoured by Sir Alex Ferguson. Due to his extremely poor performances, David Moyes should loan him out or probably be sold. If we analyse Welbeck in a little more detail we see that he has 17 goals in 91 Premier League appearances, which is a goal every 5.3 games – not great for a so-called striker.

Fernando Torres

He has only netted 34 times in his entire two-and-a-half year Chelsea career. The former Liverpool striker, who cost Chelsea a record £50million, has begun Chelsea life very, very poorly.

Dishonourable Mentions

Tim Howard
Thomas Vermaelen
Gael Clichy
Luka Modric
Emmanuel Adebayor
Robinho
