Nikola Pekovic and the Minnesota Timberwolves have finally agreed a new deal.

The pair have agreed a five-year deal that is reported to be worth $60 million.

Pekovic has been a restricted free agent since July 1st and Minnesota made it clear their priority was to keep the center.

Negotiations between the player and the team lasted over two weeks but a deal which satisfies both parties has been agreed.

Pekovic had a fantastic season last year, posting a career high 16.3 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game. He is beginning to establish himself as a dominant center in the league and it was vital for the Wolves to keep a hold of the 27-year old.

Pekovic decided to wait on Dwight Howard to make his decision before he chose a team.

Howard chose Houston and it was thought one of the teams who missed out on D12 – such as Atlanta and Dallas - would make a big offer for Pekovic but it wasn’t the case.

There were a ton of other teams with big cap space who could have made an offer for Pekovic but it never happened and the Timberwolves kept their man.

However, there has been some controversy over the deal for Pekovic. The deal sees him stay a year longer than Kevin Love, who many see as the Timberwolves superstar.

Love signed a new four year deal in January and there’s a chance he may be unhappy with the deal Pekovic has been given.

Nonetheless, the Timberwolves have one of the best frontcourts in the league and if Pekovic, Love and the rest of the roster stay healthy, then the Wolves will have a shot at the playoffs.

Minnesota had a tough season last year after being plagued with injuries but this year, after some impressive offseason additions, the Wolves look like a pretty solid team and I fancy them for a run at the playoffs.
