Chelsea are stepping up their attempts to sign German midfielder Sami Khedira, according to The Metro.
The 26-year-old Real Madrid man has reportedly informed his current club that he wants to leave this summer, after the club signed Asier Illaramendi, who will directly compete for his position.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is a known admirer of the former VfB Stuttgart man, having worked with him up until he left Madrid earlier this summer.
Khedira, widely regarded as one of the best defensive-midfielders in the world, could be available for around £15million, and is eager to leave sooner rather than later with the World Cup just around the corner.
The Blues have so far tried in vain to bring a player in this summer who fits the bill of a holding-midfielder. Reports have suggested they are hot on the tail of Roma's Danielle de Rossi, but no official bid has yet been made.
Madrid are thought to want to keep hold of Khedira until at least next year, but if Mourinho launches a substantial bid they may have no choice but to let him go, particularly as they look to raise funds for a proposed offer for Gareth Bale.
