The pitch markings have been laid, the grass cut and the nets hung. Yes, that’s right, the Premier League season is back.

It’s been a long arduous summer, of that there is no doubt. The daily grind of transfer tittle-tattle is enough to make even the most ardent fan grow tired of the game. For them as it is for most of us, the return of the new campaign is the required antidote to what is becoming the most dominant aspect of the modern game.

Well, at least for a week or two it is anyway. Optimism is never more prominent than on the first day of the season; after all, painful memories of previous campaigns have had their edges smoothed by the passing of time.

But is there real cause for you and your team to be optimistic? Although opening day fixtures can’t define a campaign they can certainly set the tone for a good season, so it is vital to claim that all-important first win as soon as possible.
