Luka Modric will refuse to be part of a deal to bring Gareth Bale to the Bernabeu in the hope that Manchester United bid for him, reports the Daily Mirror.

The Croatian star is keen to leave Real Madrid after finding his route to the first team blocked by a sea of stars.

It had been reported that the club offered him plus cash for Tottenham star Bale but Modric is ready to reject a return to White Hart Lane and wait for David Moyes to come in for him.

Moyes is yet to give up on his pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas but will consider a move for Modric as well as other targets if Fabregas refuses to change his mind.

Barcelona are happy to sell Fabregas should he wish to leave but, as of yet, the former Arsenal star has only reiterated his desire to stay with the Catalan club.

Spurs are keen to reunite with the player who left in acrimonious circumstances in 2012 either as part of an independent transfer or as part of a record breaking deal for Bale.

Andre-Villas Boas has already spent over £60m on transfers this summer and has no intention of stopping in an attempt to force the club in to the Champions League.

However, the 27-year-old has no intention of returning to north London and will scupper a deal for Bale should one be agreed.
