Lionel Messi shows Neymar who’s top dog, as he stars in a fantastic Barcelona victory.
Scoring two Messi and assisting one, pressing the Levante defence throughout the game, Messi was the star player - but when is he not?
It was a frenetic start to the game, with the opening goal coming after three minutes, and Barca were four goals up before the half-hour mark.
At that point Messi still hadn’t scored, but it was only a matter of time, and so it proved nine minutes later, when Pedro found himself in plenty of room to shoot but played an unselfish square ball, for the Argentinian maestro to pass into an empty net.
By half-time it was 6-0, but in the second half Barca definitely eased off, that was until Neymar came on in the 64th minute. His arrival sparked a new lease of life in the Barca team, relying on his pace, dribbling and trickery. He made a few runs, none of which resulted in a goal, but showing what he was about.
While this is a fantastic result, Levante were undeniably poor; with Pedro Lopez consistently getting caught out of position by Pedro. Barca will most definitely come up against tougher opposition, both domestically and in Europe.
With the signing of Neymar, Barca could be a real threat this season, both domestically and in the Champions League, whether or not last season's 7-0 aggregate drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich was a blip, we are yet to see.
While Messi was by far the main man, Cesc Fabregas showed why the Catalonian club made sure they kept him, setting up two goals and causing the Levante defence trouble with defence splitting passes.
To conclude, they will find themselves against much harder opposition than this Levante team, but none the less a composed start.
