The curious case of David Bentley

The uncertainties surrounding the transfer market continues as the long-lasting transfer saga of Gareth Bale is taking twists and turns every other day.

Tottenham Hotspur are making headlines every other day, either with new signings or with potential departures. Similar fate is enjoyed by a player who has recently been released by the Spurs.

David Bentley, was someone who broke the transfer record at Spurs following his emergence at Blackburn Rovers. He was tipped to emulate or better David Beckham after his prominent displays under Mark Hughes.

Unfortunately for Bentley, things didn't fall into place as he found it tough to get going at Spurs, and was limited to a squad role for majority of his spell at White Hart Lane.

Bentley also encountered numerous loan spells ranging from England to Russia, but couldn't get back to his groove.

He remained as a peripheral figure at Tottenham, as Aaron Lennon got better with time  stamping his authority on the right flank. After a few years of misery at the Lane Bentley made his exit as a free agent this summer.

Many clubs believes that it was a bad patch for the Englishman and are willing to try their luck with his acquisition.

Former boss Mark Hughes tried his luck in luring him to Stoke City, while there was were also reported interest from La Liga club Espanyol and Eredivisie side FC Utrecht.

Till now the costly Bentley remains as a free agent and it is believed that his high wage demands are delaying the inevitable.

But the interest in Bentley is gathering momentum each day, and one cannot rule out a marquee move for the English winger. Champions League quarter-finalists Malaga CF are the latest club linked with Bentley.

What next for Bentley is something which might go beyond the summer transfer window. I think he can find his touch in La Liga where his pin-point crosses can be more dangerous and his lack of pace will not hurt him badly.

Do you thing he can recover from the slump? Will he be able to leave behind the agonies of his stint at Spurs with a move to a more suitable club? Only time will tell.
