Arsenal are left in shock, as their opening season fixture ends in a surprise loss to Aston Villa.

After failing to secure a big-name signature during a disappointing transfer window, Arsenal’s familiar squad hosted Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. Despite having made no notable transfers, Arsene Wenger’s current side were widely expected to have a comfortable win at home, playing against a side who looked like relegation candidates last season.

Villa however did not show any signs of poor form, as they went on to take a comfortable 3-1 victory back to Villa Park.

The match started as you might expect, for the first few minutes it was end to end and a cagey affair, however after only playing for five minutes Arsenal took the lead after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got the assist for an Olivier Giroud left footed finish.

The match continued without incident until the 21st
minute, when Aston Villa were awarded a penalty, after Gabriel Agbonlahor was
fouled in the box by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Christian Benteke
stepped up to take the penalty, which was saved by Szczesny, however Benteke
headed home the rebound to level the score at 1-1.

After this Villa could be seen seizing the initiative, however the match went to half-time without any more goals being scored. After the break Villa came out fighting, until the 60th minute when Villa were awarded another penalty, when Laurent Koscienly was booked for fouling Agbonlahor.

Again Benteke took the penalty, and this time slotted it home without any mistake, making the game 2-1 to Villa.

On the 66th minute, things went from bad to worse for Wenger and his side, as defender Koscienly was sent off for receiving a second bookable offence. Villa were firmly on top at this point, and it wasn’t until the 85th minute that they secured the win, with new signing Antonio Luna making it 3-1 to Villa.

This shock defeat, will give Wenger a lot to think about for their oncoming fixtures, and will remind fans about the players they missed out on in the transfer window.
