Liverpool and Tottenham are both reported to have made formal approaches for Willian and, unless human cloning has been perfected in the next fortnight, one of the Premier League duo will end the transfer window disappointed.

The Brazilian has been made available for transfer by his employers Anzhi Makhachkala as they look to cut costs after a period of excessive spending, and the Premier League would appear to be his most likely destination.

Both Liverpool and Spurs have lodged offers of €30 million for the 25-year-old, but there can be only one winner in the race to sign Willian before the transfer window closes on September 2.

The proposed near miss for either Brendan Rodgers or Andre Villas-Boas would be one of several to have happened so far this summer, with a number of transfers breaking down after they appeared set to be completed.
