Tottenham Hotspur are set to hijack Liverpool's move for Brazilian playmaker Willian.
Tottenham have long been interested in acquiring Willian, with the north London based side trying to sign the playmaker in the last transfer window, but the player preferred to sign for Anzhi instead.
However, with the Russian club putting up their entire first-team squad on the transfer list and owner Suleyman Kerimov deciding on a new path for the club, with an emphasis on youth development being the priority, Willian is set to leave Russia barely six months after arriving in the country.
Liverpool were the club believed to be in the lead to snap up the exciting playmaker, who can also play as a winger, but Tottenham are eyeing a potential grab and run of the 25-year-old.
Willian is Anzhi’s most valuable asset and Liverpool have been in advanced talks to bring him to Anfield. The Merseysiders are willing to match Willian's current £85,000-a-week salary in order to convince the player, with hopes of the deal being concluded in the next 48 hours high along the power corridors at the club.
The player too seems to be keen on a move to join Liverpool with Willian revealing he thought the Merseyside outfit was a great club.
He said: "There was a Manchester City bid, that was turned down and that was a while ago. Now I'm waiting for a new bid in the next days from a few clubs, like Liverpool.
"If it's really Liverpool, then it is surely a great club. I'm hopeful and very calm, waiting for the best."
But Tottenham's late entry might prompt Willian to have a change of heart, and instead opt for White Hart Lane under Andre Villas-Boas over Liverpool.
He is expected to make a decision by Tuesday night on which club he would join and a deal is likely to be concluded by the middle of the week with the player arriving at his preferred destination before next Saturday.
