Ashes hero and avid Aston Villa fan Ian Bell has been riding the crest of a wave recently which was further enhanced by his boyhood team beating Arsenal 3-1 on Saturday.
Paul Lambert’s men came from 1-0 down at the Emirates Stadium to collect three points on the opening day of the Premier League campaign in a shock result.
The England middle order batsman has scored three centuries in this Ashes series and has arguably been the player of the series leading into the final Test Match at the Kia Oval which gets underway on Wednesday.
Bell’s heroics have gone a long way to ensuring the series was over before the last Test after retaining the Ashes at Old Trafford Stuart Broad helped England to victory at Chester-le-Street to an unassailable 3-0 lead.
That was just days before the Premier League season opened with a bang and in an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport Bell said it was a week to remember.
“It was incredible from Villa on Saturday and a great week, to win the Ashes and go to the Emirates and get three points is a great week for any Villa fan.”
Christian Benteke scored a brace after a summer of discontent where it looked like he was set to depart Villa Park before committing to a long term contract and Bell believes he is a crucial cog in the Villans machine.
“Benteke is like a new signing altogether, when you keep somebody of his quality so it’s a massive boost we needed with a tough start to the season with Chelsea next up. Its three points we desperately needed at the start of the year.
“This season is about building on last year and the young lads will have taken a lot out of last season to move forward. We have a good young squad and it will be nice to keep building forward over the coming years,” the Warwickshire batsman told GiveMeSport.
“To finish in the top 10 would be an amazing season and to get anywhere near the top seven will be hard work but mid table will be an improvement and there is some massive players there for the future.”
