Accrington Stanley Managing Director given betting ban
Accrington Stanley managing director Robert Heys has been suspended from football activity for 21-months after breaching 735 FA betting rules
Accrington Stanley chief Robert Heys has been banned from all football activity for 21-months after 735 breaches of the Football Association's betting rules.
Heys also admitted he committed the breaches over a 10-year period after a hearing last Thursday, he has also been fined £1,000.
Out of the 735 bets, 231 were on his team Accrington Stanley, whilst 37 being for his club to lose.
Heys apologised via a statement on the clubs website, yet also stated that he intended to appeal his ban. He said: "Anyone who knows me personally will know that I only ever want a win for my team.
"I have not staked any bet of any kind on Accrington Stanley for over three years. Furthermore, I have not placed any bet which would contravene the betting regulations for over 10 months," he added.
"I have rightly suffered because of my actions, and the lengthy suspension that has been imposed upon me should be viewed as a warning to those involved in football as to the consequences of such irresponsible actions."
Heys admitted that he lost £421 on bets involving Accrington Stanley, with the MD losing a mighty £2,300 in total. He previously changed his role from Chief Executive to Managing Director in May last year.
He also stated that he was going to appeal the 21-month ban: "I fully intend to appeal against the excessiveness of the penalty in an effort to get it reduced so that I may work towards resuming my career within the football industry," he informed.
Previously, well known footballers Cameron Jerome and Andros Townsend were given fines after breaching betting regulations, Jerome given a £50,000 fine whilst Townsend an £18,000 fine. It is thought that neither player placed bets regarding their current clubs.
Accrington will make no further comment at this stage.
