Arsenal don't need Yohan Cabaye

According to BBC Sport, Arsenal have lodged a £10 million bid for Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

The Frenchman has been rumoured to want to leave the Magpies, but Newcastle have strongly suggested that he is not up for sale. Despite that, they have yet to formally reject the bid and left him out of their match squad for their clash against Manchester City on Monday night.

However, Arsenal fans will surely be experiencing that all-too familiar feeling of deja vu. It was only two years ago that Arsene Wenger was forced to spend after a humiliating defeat at Old Trafford.

His spending spree then saw him bring in mid-range, average players such as Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker - the only real successful signing being Mikel Arteta.

It seems that another embarrassing defeat has forced the Arsenal boss to finally dip into his pocket, yet Arsenal fans will still be disappointed by the style and calibre of player that he is trying to attract.

Having been linked with the likes of Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Wayne Rooney, this transfer story will come as a disappointment.

Of course, Cabaye is a player of great quality. He has scored some stunning goals during his time in the North East and is known for his spectacular set-piece skills.

His meticulous short passing and pin-point long balls are also a strong side to his game. But Arsenal do not need him.

Central midfield is Arsenal's strongest position by a long way. Cabaye himself is a playmaker - Arsenal are not short of those. His play style and posture are similar to that of  Arteta, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla.

Cabaye is a good player, but there is nothing different that he can add to the current squad.

Instead, the Gunners would be better off with a more physically imposing midfielder - someone like a Patrick Viera, or a Gilberto Silva. They have missed a defensive midfielder with a strong presence since the latter's departure.

Marouane Fellaini would fill that role perfectly, although Wenger will have to reach much further into his pocket if he is to lure the Belgian away from Goodison Park.
