Arsenal have sent representatives to Spain to tie up a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita this week.
According to Super Deporte, the Gunners have been watching the 26-year-old for some time and his recent unhappiness at being dropped has sparked them into action.
Current Arsenal number one Wojciech Szczesny looked jittery in the loss to Aston Villa in the club’s Premier League opening day fixture.
The Poland international was dropped last season because of substandard performances and the showing against Villa suggested he was not back to his best yet.
Super Deporte claim Guaita was displeased at being left on the bench by Valencia manager Miroslav Djukic for their first game on the Liga season on Saturday – a 1-0 victory over Malaga.
It also says the Spanish club were hoping to renew his contract, which expires in 2015, but the first day bust up has left his future at the Mestalla in serious doubt.
Guaita came through the ranks at Valencia and had established himself as number one before being scuppered by injury, meaning Brazilian Diego Alves has taken over.
