Brazilian International Willian, who moved to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in January for a reported £30 million fee is being chased by Premier League clubs Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Anzhi, who have spent millions to forge a super star team, are in deep financial trouble at the moment and their star players are expected to exit in order to keep the club afloat with Willian topping the list.

Liverpool were thought to be in the drivers seat a few days ago and were favourites to land the Brazilian international. However, they couldn't wrap up the deal quickly as Tottenham entered the race for their long-term target, who first slipped away from Brendan Rodgers' grasp six months ago. As things stands now, Spurs appear to be favourites for the attacking midfielder who is believed to be in London for a medical ahead of his proposed move to White Hart Lane.

Willian rose into prominence after he moved to Ukrainian outfit Shakthar Donestk from Brazilian club Corinthians in 2007. The attacking midfielder was deadly for the Ukrainians in their domestic league as well as in Champions League. He scored 37 goals for the club before making a big money move to Anzhi in the winter.

Willian is a creative genius who primarily plays behind the striker but is also versatile enough to play on either wings. He has been targeted by Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas before, and bringing him to White Hart Lane would be a definite statement of intent from Tottenham.

The six months Willian spent in Russia further highlighted his technical capabilities and the samba flair he possesses. He was Anzhi's most consistent and important player and registered three assists in a league where his team has scored only four goals prior to this period, underlining his importance to the squad.

Willian is a good dribbler on the ball, while his creative vision and eye for key passes make him someone special. It's believed that Spurs are lining up the Brazilian to replace Real Madrid-bound Gareth Bale, who occupied the number 10 role last season. Currently, this position is occupied by Gylfi Sigurdsson and it remains to seen how this scenario will develop in the future.

Bale is undoubtedly a player that will be very hard to replace. But by bringing in a player of Willian's capabilities, Spurs can lessen the blow and with the remaining money they can upgrade other departments of the team as well.

With Eric Lamela and Fabio Coentrao also linked with a move to White Hart Lane, Spurs are preparing for life without Bale. Willian will definitely have a big role to play.
