Barcelona have revealed midfielder Ibrahim Afellay is set to undergo surgery this week, as the Dutch star continues to struggle with a thigh injury.
The 27-year-old will have an operation on Thursday, to help solve a chronic muscle injury in his right thigh.
It is unknown how long Afellay will be sidelined for, with club doctors set to make an announcement following the surgery to his anterior rectus muscle in his right thigh.
Afellay has struggled to make an impact at Barcelona, following his switch from PSV for €3 million in January 2011.
Blighted by injuries during his time at the Spanish club, this is the latest setback in a long line of physical problems, with the midfielder undergoing surgery in October 2011 to mend a torn ligament in his left knee.
The Dutchman was sent on on loan to Bundesliga side Schalke last season, however also missed games through injury.
Barcelona made a winning start to their La Liga campaign last weekend, when the demolished Levante 7-0 at the Nou Camp.
The reigning champions face Atletico Madrid tomorrow evening (Wednesday) in the first leg of their domestic Super Cup clash.
