Arsene Wenger seems to have run out of time at Arsenal, with fans showing their anger at him after the third and final Aston Villa goal went in during the defeat on Saturday.
At first, the boos were directed at the referee but as the game went on the boos went more towards their long-time manager, Wenger. But are these boos justified?
The last time Arsenal won a trophy was in 2005. Let me repeat that - 2005. For a big team, this is unacceptable and for most managers this lack of trophies would see them heading for the door, but this hasn’t been the case.
Arsene Wenger is still in charge and it seems he still has the backing of the board and the squad, but the fans are tired of this barren spell.
Arsenal fans are probably also tired of being ridiculed for Wenger’s comments every year that next year they will have the best team in the world. This hasn’t materialised as of yet and, if anything, the opposite has occurred with Arsenal selling their big name players almost every season.
They have lost two captains in the last four seasons (Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie), as well as other first-team stars in Alex Song and Samir Nasri. And, most irritatingly for Arsenal fans, these players have not yet been replaced.
This transfer window has so far been another disappointing one from Arsenal’s perspective. Having had bids for Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Yohan Cabaye all rejected, Arsenal fans are now worried that they cannot attract big name players anymore. And this may be the truth.
So how can this problem be sorted? Sack their most successful manager? Throw money at players to try lure them to the Emirates? No one can be sure. One thing that is for sure though, is that if Arsenal don’t win a trophy this season and go into next season having not won a trophy for a decade, Arsene Wenger will be in trouble. Big trouble.
