Lyon played Spanish side Real Sociedad at the Stade de Gerland on Tuesday night for the UEFA Champions League qualifying match. It is the first leg of two matches in which the second will be played next week.
Real Sociedad who were away and firmly the underdogs for this encounter ended up winning 2-0 thanks to superb strikes by Antoine Griezmann and Haris Steferovic. But Griezmann’s effort was made more special by the fact that Olympique Lyonnais is the club he has supported since his childhood.
According to the UEFA official website, prior to the match, the French winger stated the following: "For me, Lyon has been my club since I was a kid," he said. "I used to come to see all the Champions League matches here with my father. Seen from Spain, Lyon are a club that counts, a historic club.
"The moment I stepped on the Stade de Gerland pitch, I felt a lot of emotions,"
Griezmann added: "I even pointed out the spots in the stands where I used to sit. I can't wait until I put my boots on tomorrow. But there's no feeling of revenge: I just want to play. This will be my first competitive match in France with Real Sociedad - and to top it off, it'll be a Champions League match."
Antoine Griezmann, 22, has been playing for Real Sociedad ever since he was 14 after being scouted from hometown club UF Mâcon. The young player has scored 31 goals in a career total of 153 appearances, but has never featured for the national team.
