Celtic defeat highlights decline in Scotland

With Celtic falling to a 2-0 away defeat to Shakhter Karagandy yesterday afternoon it looks likely that there will be no Scottish teams in Europe's elite competition this year.

Last season, Celtic progressed through the group stages in the Champions League defeating Barcelona seemingly proving to everyone that the standard of Scottish Football is still relatively high. This Summer Celtic lost many of their key players that are yet to be replaced and manager Neil Lennon will find it hard to attract top players to a club heading out of Europe.

With the liquidation of Rangers in 2012 and the more recent financial troubles of Hearts it seems there are big money problems in the Scottish Premiership. The failure to get any team into a European competition will only add to these problems and less Europa League places may be offered by UEFA next season. UEFA took away a Champions League spot last year meaning only the league winners (Celtic) would represent Scotland in Qualification.

Since its foundation in 1998 the Scottish Premier League was a two horse race between Rangers and Celtic. When Rangers were liquidated it seemed Celtic would dominate Scottish Football for years to come. The Scottish Premier League has been abolished but the problem remains the same, no team can challenge Celtic for the title which they will almost certainly win again this season. It almost becomes boring to watch Scottish Football when the teams are really just competing for second place.

The new Scottish Football League looks like it could be set to go through a 'dark age' as the standard declines in the league. Other European countries are catching them up, like Kazakhstan, Shakhter Karagandy were unknown to the footballing world but there 2-0 win over Celtic shows countries not known for football are catching up, money needs to be pumped in or their is a risk football in Scotland could decline.
