Sunderland are closing in on another summer signing after Greek international winger Charis Mavrias arrived at the club for a medical ahead of a proposed £2.5 million move.

The 19-year-old is in talks with the Black Cats over personal terms, and is set to undergo a medical at the Stadium of Light after the club agreed a fee with Panathinaikos.

The youngster is highly-rated by his current employers, having made over 60 appearances for the Greeks, and also has two caps for the national side.

Blessed with Champions League experience also, Mavrias became the second-youngest debutant in Europe's elite club competition, at the tender age of 16.

The move will see manager Paolo Di Canio further strengthen his squad, after a host of signings this summer.

Sunderland will be looking avoid another involvement in a relegation battle as they narrowly avoided the drop last season, although they endured a painful start on Saturday as they were beaten at home to Fulham by one goal to nil.
