Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has insisted that a new signing will improve the mood among his current squad.

The Magpies' 2013/14 Premier League campaign got off to a woeful start on Monday night, as Pardew's men were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Fans have become increasingly frustrated at a lack of activity in the transfer market this summer, with only QPR frontman Loic Remy arriving on a season-long loan deal from recently relegated Queens Park Rangers.

And Pardew, who has been in charge at St James' Park since taking the role in December 2010, claims that his players are just as keen to see some fresh blood enter the club.

“I think a player does that to the group," he told The Chronicle. "A big player coming in boosts the group as well as the fans. I’m not going to say something that I don’t think is true and say ‘oh, it’s not affecting them’.

“I think they’d like to see another striker come in the door. That’s something that hopefully will be done before the window shuts.”

Newcastle will look to bounce back from Monday's mauling as they welcome Sam Allardyce's West Ham United to the North East on Saturday afternoon.
