Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is prepared to make the French striker their highest-paid player as Wenger set to offer £40million for the Real Madrid man, according to the London Evening Standard.

£140,000 a week is what Arsenal are willing to pay Karim Benzema as they try to tempt the striker to the Emirates.

And, Arsene Wenger, who has been under pressure from the supporters for the lack of movement in the transfer window, has indicated they would be preparing a bid for the 25-year-old French international.

According to French newspaper L'Equipe, the striker is the highest-paid French star, earning 8.5million, before tax, which equates to around £140,000 and the Gunners have sought to assure him there will be no need to take a pay cut.

Wenger is said to be a long-term admirer of Benzema but whether the Spanish giants will be convinced to sell is another matter, having already let Gonzalo Higuain leave, and another Arsenal target, to Napoli.

Olivier Giroud, the team’s only recognised striker, has encouraged Wenger to bring in a new striker before the transfer window slams shut on September 2.

"It's necessary for the club to recruit another striker. Obviously I think about it a little bit. It may change the play one day, especially if it's a high-profile signing," he told Le Parisien.

Arsenal, who are still linked with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, are reluctant to improve their offer of £40,000,001 for the Uruguayan after learning it would not trigger the release clause in his contract, will now turn their attentions to Benzema.
