Italian side Napoli are on a massive spending spree this summer following the sale of Uruguayan striker, Edinson Cavani for €64million to Paris Saint-Germain.
Under new manager, Rafael Benitez, Napoli have already secured the services of Gonzalo Higuain, Pepe Reina, Raul Albiol and Jose Callejon, and are now ready to be regarded as a new dominating force in Italy as well as across Europe.
But, the Spanish boss still has one more big name signing in mind, with Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel at the top of his wish list, according to the Daily Mirror.
Skrtel has been linked with a possible move to Napoli all summer, and on late Tuesday, the Anfield outfit received a £10million offer from The Azzuri. But, it was instantly rejected as Liverpool are unwilling to part ways with one of their main players in defence.
Although the Merseyside club already signed Kolo Toure earlier this transfer window, who would provide cover for the central defence, a serious ligament injury to youngster Sebastian Coates recently - which will keep him out for six months - has had the manager thinking and has finally made up his mind at not letting go of any top names this summer.
The 28-year-old defender was bought by Benitez, then Liverpool manager, in 2008 for a reported fee of £6.5million from Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Regarded as one of the best defender for both club and country, he has made 206 appearances for Liverpool, also scoring nine goals, mainly from set-pieces.
Skrtel has represented the Slovakian national team 61 times since 2004. The centre-back has been injury prone in recent years, with the latest being a sprained knee ligament injury which is not serious as it was thought to be earlier and the player would be able to resume full training in the latter part of August.
Napoli, though, have not given up on their desire to sign Skrtel, and it's believed they will be back with an improved bid in the coming days before the window closes on September 2.
