Manchester United have had an array of world class centre-backs on their books over the last couple of decades.
The likes of Steve Bruce, Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand have all served the club with distinction, but nobody breeds more confidence in Manchester United's supporters than Nemanja Vidic.
Vidic arrived at the club in January 2006 - alongside Patrice Evra - and nobody really knew what to expect from the Serbian international.
However the 6ft 4in centre-back quickly settled into life at Old Trafford - forming an outstanding relationship with Ferdinand.
The £7million signing from Spartak Moscow was also an instant hit with fans of the current Premier League champions due to his commitment, courage and determination to win.
At the time of his transfer, Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV: "Good defenders win you things.
"This lad is really natural and athletic. You need good defenders and that is exactly what this lad is."
Ferguson was right regarding Vidic's importance to the side as United won the League Cup just one month after his arrival at the club.
That was just the start of things to come though as Vidic went on to lift the Champions League, five Premier League titles and another League Cup.
Those trophies were made possible due to the combination of Vidic and Ferdinand.
In fact, Ferguson admired Vidic so much that he decided to appoint the stopper captain in September 2010 - due to Ferdinand's persistent injury problems.
The 31-year-old wears his heart on his sleeve, which was highlighted when he retired from international football after fans were criticising his performances.
That has only been a positive for Manchester United as he has been able to concentrate on his club career and work on his fitness when his teammates are away on international duty.
Vidic has been a rock in United's side for the last eight years and looks set to have another fantastic year at Old Trafford.
