Arsenal: Three strikers to fill Van Persie void

Arsenal have had many world class strikers in recent years, with Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie just two examples of forwards to lead their front line, securing themselves over 30 goals per season.

Now Arsenal have just one striker in Olivier Giroud and the club is in desperate need of a clinical forward who can play either alongside or instead of the Frenchman. Here are three of the options available to Arsenal.

Michu:
27-year-old Michu was not only the biggest surprise of last season but also the best signing of the summer. Michu had spent the whole of his career playing in the second and third divisions of Spanish football and had a terrible goal scoring record for a striker. His signing for Swansea for a fee of £2 million in July 2012 was hardly reported and disappointed many Swansea fans, who didn’t believe he was a capable replacement for Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Michu surprised everyone with his performance last season, scoring 22 goals in his first campaign in English football and is bound to improve in his second season in the Premier League. Arsene Wenger has had a strong interest in Michu this summer, believing that he would fit into Arsenal’s style of play and score goals immediately. Swansea ideally would not want to sell their best player but Arsenal could get Michu if the price is right. Swansea would consider letting Michu go if they receive and offer of £25 million.

Christian Benteke:
Christian Benteke has only been playing in England for one season but has already proven himself to be an amazing talent. Having scored 23 goals in his first season and already scoring three goals in the first two Premier League games of this campaign, Benteke is looking like he could be a real force to be reckoned with once again.

Arsenal have already seen what Benteke is capable of first hand when he scored against them twice in their opening day defeat to Aston Villa, and they could be able to sign the 22-year-old Belgian this summer. Benteke, a lifelong Arsenal fan, is interested in moving to a bigger club as he believes his talents would be better applied at a team in the Champions League. Although Chelsea have expressed an interest in the past, Arsenal are in more desperate need of a striker and they could sign Benteke with a bid of around £30 million.

Karim Benzema:
Karim Benzema is without a doubt one of the best strikers in the world. At Real Madrid he has averaged 22 goals per season while sharing the limelight with Gonzalo Higuain. This season Benzema is the only senior striker Real have on their team and they would not want to part with him this summer unless they find a replacement that is better than him.

Madrid’s pursuit of Gareth Bale has been well documented this summer but they would also like to sign Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. This gives Arsenal the chance to sign Benzema as Madrid might be willing to part with him if it was to fund a move for Suarez.

Wenger has been an admirer of Benzema for years and will launch an opening offer of £40 million for the French superstar. Although this is the most unlikely signing of the three, Benzema could be moving to North London this summer.
